Visualizing mental health.

Portugal has one of the highest rates of mental illness in the entire European Union.
In an effort to fight an underlying cultural prejudice against them, I sought to make it clearer.

Mental Health in Portugal

Academic Assignment

Portugal, 2010

For an academic assignment, students were requested to employ three-dimensional software to convert any set of raw data into a 3D visualization. I took it personal, and spent a couple of weeks compiling dispersed information, regarding what seems to me to be a sadly undervalued social issue in Portugal: mental health. After narrowing the data down to a handful of striking bits of information, I somehow managed to do the flattest, most two-dimensional piece of 3D animation ever.

By employing procedural, code-based animation techniques, with some degree of controlled yet unpredictable variation, the piece seeks to encode meaning into seemingly abstract representations of data, leaving space for the moody typography to selectively work as a conveyor of data itself.
